CHRIS TSEFALAS
I'm All Right (In Music We Trust)
Reviewed by DJ Johnson
Our man Chris is a clever songwriter indeed, able to blend the chewiest pop with the dreamiest psychedelic streams of sound. He also coaxes some rather brilliant sounds from his guitar, such as the brittle rhythm tone on "I'm All Right, It's Okay," which sounds like he's strumming a frozen spiderweb. There are crystaline tones, and then there's this. I'm All Right has a few upbeat tunes, but the general theme is introspection at low-to-mid tempo, delivered by a group of guys who seem quite relaxed and comfortable with the material and each other. There's an overall looseness about the performances -- in atmosphere, not in accuracy -- that makes the whole thing feel more personal for the listener. And it should, because it's a personal album. The title is a reference to a recent medical crisis Tsefalas went through involving multiple tumors. According to the grapevine, he is, in fact, all right now, and it looks like he's going to be making music for a long time to come.
