FRANK BROWN
Out Of The Blue (Record Cellar)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
This is Frank Brown's fifth outing on Record Cellar, the Philly based indie that's made a big impact with a distinctive brand of pop Americana. Brown's previous albums were released under group names, Flight of Mavis and Buzz Zeemer, but it's his individual talent, particularly with pen in hand, that's made Brown a driving force in those bands and on the musical personality of his label.
It's because Brown is such a fine songwriter that I'm glad there's no lyric sheet with the disc. These are songs that deserve to be listened to until they're learned, and then listened to again. And again. The Record Cellar folks have their own ideas about 'emphasis' tracks, but until you know "You Don't Know What You Started" by heart, you simply haven't heard enough of Frank Brown.
Track List: She Just Wants To Be Loved * Always Down * Heartbreak Motel * Don't Say You Never * You Don't Know What You Started * Peace Of Mind * Nostalgia * No Resistance * Rocketship * Grey Door * Greatest Love
