JAY GEILS
Plays Jazz! (Stony Plain)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

Scary title huh? Turns out Jay Geils, the long standing guitarist for Peter Wolf's faux Stones outfit, can leave his standard blues riffs behind and strum like Joe Pass. Geils invites like minded pals like Crispin Cioe and Jerry Miller along to run through a batch of Ellington, Goodman and Hodges standards. The playing is surprisingly nimble and restrained, paying proper homage as tradition requires. It's a nice record, no more, no less.
