M-LAB
From Baser Elements (self-released)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

The title of M-Lab's debut album refers to the efforts of ancient alchemists to create gold from 'baser elements' like lead, but the title's relation to the band itself is thin at best. M-Lab is composed, after all, of exceptional elements.

At first listen, two of those grab immediate attention. Vocalist Drew Brody has the kind of range and power that are hallmarks of a trained voice, a singer whose attention to his instrument is comparable to the care a violinist might give a treasured Stradivarius. Speaking of violins, the other immediately distinctive element of the M-Lab sound is violinist Skye Steele, who weaves both acoustic and electric variations of the instrument into the arrangements.

Brody and Steele may draw more initial notice, but it's soon apparent that every member, including keyboardist Derek Gregor, bassist Twon and drummer Mike White, makes an indispensable contribution to the M-Lab sound. The basic tracks, keys, drums and bass, were laid down live on the stage of one NYC's hottest venues, Arlene's Grocery, with vocals and violin added in the studio, an effort to capture live energy and studio clarity on a single disc. It's an effort that worked, and the music thus created was definitely worth the extra effort and attention.

Brilliantly conceived and boldly performed, From Baser Elements offers music with a rare combination of epic sweep and emotional intimacy, proof positive that a band which has built its reputation on ambitious staging and dramatic performance can translate its power and passion to disc.
