THE ORGAN
Grab That Gun (Mint)

Reviewed by DJ Johnson

They ain't called The Organ for nothin'. Even when all else is a swirling ice storm of retro-80s echo and moody textures, the key to their sound is the organ, oh-so light on the FX, angular and up front in the mix, a contrast that works to perfection. The all-female quintet from Vancouver, British Columbia, have an obvious affection for post-punk melancholia, but their version is so much ballsier than that of the founders it really makes most of that sound anemic by comparison. An interesting element of the sound is the voice of Katie Sketch, which sounds uncannily like Debbie Harry's. Ever wondered what Deb would have sounded like with The Smiths? Well, sort of like this, but with a lot more feast for the ears. For folks who like a band that has guts, mystique, a sense of melody and doesn't sound like everyone else flooding the scene these days, this is a good bet.
