STEVE VENZ
Scoop (Daal Jazz)
Reviewed by Ron Saranich
Scoop, by Steve Venz, is the artist's initial recording as leader. Featuring nine originals songs and a cover of the Beatles "I Will," this CD shines throughout. Venz plays kickass bass, laying down hot grooves that inspire his fellow musicians - Doug Webb on tenor and soprano saxophones, Steve Cotter on guitar, Joe Bagg on Hammond B-3 organ, and Jason Harnell on drums. Venz's band sounds admirably integrated. Webb is particularly noteworthy, producing a plethora of wonderful solos; his soprano work is mesmerizing.
The first time I heard Scoop, I stopped my chores and sat down to give it my undivided attention. The music at times soars lighter than air, and other times burns with hot passion. Venz's compositional skills are refined and versatile, with songs running the gamut from swing to Afro-Cuban to Bossa Nova. He has a lot to say, and the majority of it is of interest to both diehard and casual Jazz fans. For a debut recording, Scoop avoids cutting corners or grandstanding. All in all, it's an eloquent release worthy of your hard earned dollars. Venz is a talent to watch, and I, for one, await his next effort.
