Sixteen Bluegrass Gospel Greats (CMH Records)
Reviewed by Ron Saranich
Sixteen Bluegrass Gospel Greats is a good representation of this musical genre. It contains easily recognizable favorites such as "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" and "Swing Low Sweet Chariot," as well as several lesser know classics like "Angel Band," "What Would You Give In Exchange For Your Soul," and "I'm Using My Bible For A Roadmap." All the performances are well played, eloquent in their sincerity, and packed full of emotional content. The artists are among the finest in the gospel bluegrass field, and include such notable as Lester Flatts, Carl Story, The Osborne Brothers, Mac Wiseman, and Grandpa Jones. I realize the religious subject matter might turn off some listeners. This would be a mistake. The vocal harmonies and instrumental virtuosity are top notch, superbly complimenting each other. CMH Records has thoughtfully chosen their selections, resulting in a compilation that works well for both new listeners and seasoned bluegrass veterans. Sixteen Bluegrass Gospel Greats is worth a listen.
