ANDREW BIRD'S BOWL OF FIRE
Oh! The Grandeur (Ryko)

The Squirrel Nut Zippers's chart-topping, old timey, swing jazz sound has
opened the door for something just as delicious. Part time fiddler for said
band, Andrew Bird is carving out his own unique niche in presenting music of
eras past. Oh! The Grandeur has less swing and more cabaret in the grooves,
but the grooves are certainly there. This is more of a parlour record worth
savouring rather than a shimmying one. Like sneaking the devil's drink in
prohibition times, this platter is a grande guilty pleasure. Do yourself a
favour, draw the curtains, light up a stoagie, olive the martinis and crank
the phonograph for a night of heavenly sin. Oh yes, I must mention the
superb packaging, courtesy of comic genius (he of the finest detail historic
fixation) Chris Ware - a match made in heaven.
