ERNEST TUBB
20th Century Masters/Millennium Collection (MCA)

Reviewed by DJ Johnson

At a few minutes over half an hour in length, this entry in the Millennium Collection is not going to interest the serious Ernest Tubb fan, but for those who just want a sampling at a decent price, it's a pretty fair snag. The dozen tracks include some of the purest gems of country music, including "Rainbow At Midnight," "Waltz Across Texas," "Drivin' Nails In My Coffin" and ET's signature tune, "Walking The Floor Over You." You can't overestimate the historical value of this man and his music. He was one of the first country artists to gain favor with Northern American mainstream listeners, and his influence is now felt all through the alt movement that may just save country's sorry, commercialized ass. Brevity aside, you really couldn't ask for a better dozen songs to introduce you to this special artist.

Track List:

Walking The Floor Over You * It's Been So Long Darling * Rainbow At Midnight * Drivin' Nails In My Coffin * Have You Ever Been Lonely (Have You Ever Been Blue?) * Slippin' Around * Driftwood On the River * Two Glasses Joe * Half A Mind * Thanks A Lot * Waltz Across Texas * Sweet Thang (with Loretta Lynn)
