THREE FINGER COWBOY
Hooray For Love (Daemon)
Reviewed by Eric
Steiner
Three Finger Cowboy's second Daemon CD, Hooray For Love, begins with a
powerful synth-driven "Foot of Snow," and continues through 12 other tracks
that feature Katherine McElroy's unique vocals backed by a trio that's got
power pop and punk down cold. "Feeling Lucky," "The Lion Tamer," "The Boy
Who Can't Win," and "The Fastest Kid in School" owe more than hard-driving
riffs and catchy refrains to late 70's masters of power pop like Bram
Tchaikovsky or Rockpile. If those references aren't Y2K compliant enough,
file Three Finger Cowboy up alongside some of the best new pop found
anywhere, indie or not. On "Millionaires," Three Finger Cowboy is hoping
for "heavy rotation on the radio station" and I hope they get more than
their share. The band's story, complete with Pez, senior citizens and used
heroin (don't ask), and a 62-piece drum kit and caffeine addiction is a
rollicking read at http://www.daemon.com. The label has put Hooray For
Love online: check it out and head straight for the alt.rock, power pop,
or indie racks. No matter where you'll find Hooray for Love, Three Finger
Cowboy'll sure create power pop memories. Just like the old days of the
late 70's, but better.
