WILD COLONIALS
Reel Life Vol. #1 (Chromatic)

With all the slick pablum that passes for Hollywood soundtracks these days,
it's a pleasure to report on a group who tackle the genre with true
ingenuity and verve. Though the name may be a bit of mystery, the music of
the Wild Colonials crops up in over twenty-four movies, and the band is just
getting rolling. More than an introduction, this compilation works well as a
unique listening device on its own merit, proving the Colonials to be deft
pop crafters of the Burt Bacharach school of subtle hooks. A languid version
of "It's Not Unusual" sets the scene perfectly. Theirs is a sneaky music,
the non-disposable kind that stays a while. Diversity is also a key as the
Colonials drift effortlessly into bluesy and jazzy waters. For my money, the
band shines best on the moody tracks that finish the record off. Very fine
indeed.
