DEATH BY CHOCOLATE
Death By Chocolate (Jetset)

Angie Tillet is a teenager, she's bored and here's the proof. While most youngsters with a musical bent tend to vent their frustrations by bashing instruments and screaming till voices change, Angie transports her tedium directly to record by ho-humming her way through this understated pop collection. A bit of cocktail sprinkling gives this placid pop record an interesting bent, and the perfect backdrop to Angie's deadpan narrative. She does manage to break out (sort of) in song on the odd occasion, though there must be some arm twisting going on. She resurrects Cat Stevens' wonderful "If you want to sing out sing out", but really doesn't. And as dour as the record appears on paper, there is something utterly charming going on here. The plunky pop nicks from mid-sixties Britain offer a certain detached, unobtrusive groove. It can get quite hypnotizing, really. Here's hoping this teenager never gets to the surly stage.
