DR. JOHN
Hoodoo - The Collection (Music Club)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Between his tenure as the teenaged go-to guy (as a writer, player, producer and arranger) for New Orlean's Ace Records and his emergence as the glitter tossing, mojo making Night Tripper in Hollywood, Mac Rebennack teamed up with Huey P. Meaux, the Crazy Cajun, in Texas. The tracks he laid down for Meaux's Crazy Cajun label have been dusted off and reissued on this new Music Club collection, and it's high time because it's some of the best work in Rebennack's discography, which includes some very fine work indeed.

There are hints of the Night Tripper to come here, but the primary groove is straight R&B, though in the inimitable Dr. John style. When he turns on the hoodoo, though, he makes it clear that nobody hoodoo like he do, and did, and will hopefully do for a good long while to come.

This is classic stuff, largely unheard, and if you're an aficionado of the Doctor himself, New Orleans R&B generally or just great music its a collection you should get ahold of.
