EYES OF PANDORA
Eyes Of Pandora (self-released)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Florida seems to be the hot spot for new talent these days, but as is so often the case the majors seem to be missing much of the best the region has to offer. In fact, the best music I've heard from the Sunshine State has come from the Florida indie, Y&T Records, home of Amanda Green, Eric Alexandrakis and Mary Karlzen, among others. The label is diverse, quirky even, but I've never been disappointed by a Y&T release.

Eyes Of Pandora aren't on Y&T, but they're definitely in the same orbit. Alexandrakis has the producer's credit on this self-released debut, and contributes guitar, backing vocals, percussion, keyboards and mandolin. Amanda Green's on board, too, as the piano player.

They're part of the supporting cast for guitarist/composer Robert Gueits and vocalist Susan Tojo, who are the guiding lights of Eyes Of Pandora. Each is exceptionally talented, and in tandem they make exceptional music. I happen to be particularly fond of the female voice in music, and there is no one I'd rather listen to than Susan Tojo these days. The fact that I get to hear her sing songs written by Gueits is a big bonus, because he's got some of the best developed melodic instincts in the biz and he has guitar chops to match those instincts.

There are elements of psychedelia, pure pop, anthem rock and more in the mix here. No matter what stylistic approach they take on a particular track, though, there's frankly more passion crammed into every note than you'll find spread out over the average album. These are people who make real good music because they really care about it and it shows. You haven't heard enough music to judge the year's best until you hear this one. It's on my short list already, and it's early in the year.

So here it is, folks, the best ten bucks you'll spend on music this year. Bounce right over to www.eyesofpandora.com and get a copy of this one without delay, because if you delay some major label is bound to pick this one up and charge you sixteen bucks for it. And once you've heard the music, you'll be glad to pay the price.
