Austin's Antone's nightclub celebrated its 20th anniversary in 1995 with Pinetop Perkins not far from his 82nd birthday. On Live at Antone's Vol. 1, this living legend is backed by fellow Muddy Waters/Legendary Bluesband-mates Calvin Jones on bass and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith on drums, and this CD has the feel of a great Muddy Waters show with guest blues artists like Kim Wilson on harp, Rusty Zinn on guitar and Mark Kazanoff on sax. This stellar line-up powers through Muddy Waters' classics like "Got My Mojo Working" and "Hoochie Coochie Man," and Pinetop sounds like he's having the time of his life doing "Pinetop's Mambo," or "Caldonia." There's some of Pinetop's best playing on Live at Antone's, and I hope the Texas Music Group will release Vol. 2.
