ZYRAH'S ORANGE
Body (self released)

Damn. Fans of the loosely defined "jam band" genre spend way too much
time defending their favored musical form against charges of mindless
noodling from those who fail to appreciate the often spacey extended
improvisation that has been the hallmark of the scene since the first
time the Grateful Dead played "Dark Star." It doesn't help any when it
turns out to be true.
Unfortunately, it is true on a good bit of Body, the second album from
the Boston based jam trio Zyrah's Orange. Which is even more
unfortunate because this is a real fine band, capable of crafting an
above average pop hook, knocking off a spot on three part harmony and
creating a remarkably rich sound for a three piece outfit. Songs like
"Last Day" and "Messaged" are too good to overlook, but their
interspersed between tracks that are just a bit too self indulgent.
Guitarist/vocalist Elliot Page has great chops, but maybe next time out
he should hand over the production chores to someone who can keep those
chops confined a bit.
The lineup is rounded out by Ben Thibault on bass and Dan Gulloti on
drums. Both are skillful players and capable singers. Zyrah's Orange
is a band to watch out for, but they could use someone to watch over
them in the studio.
