FEDERATION X
American Folk Horror (Estrus Records)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Oh, this is angry, scary stuff, like clips from a small town newspaper
turned into songs about murder and suspected neighborhood Satanic cults. The
music is abrasive and angry, the whine of guitar lurching against the
background of bass and percussion as though the guitarist is propped up
against the wall and about to fall down, while the vocals are muted and
staticky and screaming, a bad phone call from the drunk psychopath down the
street. It ain't dance music, Sherlock. It's more like music to rev your
chainsaw up to. Oddly enough, Mahatma Ghandi gets credit for writing all
these songs, including the one about hunting moose.
