KATASTROPHY WIFE
Amusia (Almafame Limited)
Reviewed by Holly Day
There was this comic book I used to read when I was a kid about a
rollerskating bimbo armed with disco-balls and laser lights named "Dazzler,"
and one of Dazzler's arch-enemies was this chick named Screaming Mimi, a
villain who could scream so long and so loud that she'd send her victims
into a state of coma immobility. Former Babes in Toyland lead singer Kat
Bjelland is the living incarnation of Screaming Mimi, and, in her new band
and album, it's her trademark, impossibly long/loud scream (man, can that
girl hold her breath!) that makes these songs worth listening to. God knows
it's not the lyrics, which touch on idiot savant brilliance at times but
mostly remain ridiculously easy and inane; however, her glass-breaking
shrieks come damned close to making up for this deficit.
