OLETA ADAMS
All The Love (Pioneer)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Pacific Northwest bred and Kansas City based, Oleta Adams is set to
(re)capture the entire pop world with her new album, which was released on
Valentines Day. After capturing attention with her 1990 Platinum debut,
Circle Of One, Adams solidified her Adult Contemporary credentials before
moving in a gospel direction (moving back, really. Her first performances
were in the choir of her father's church in Yakima, Washington). Now, after
a five year absence, she's back in the AC hunt with a collection of soul
flavored pop that should plant her firmly atop the diva platform.
The title track is the first single, but I can't imagine it being the last.
"I Hope You Dance" is a personal favorite, and "The Power Of Sacrifice"
seems as timely today as "Get Here" turned out to be when it was adopted as
the unofficial anthem of the Gulf War a decade ago.
In a scene where power is too often confused with passion, Adams presents a
set of passionate but
nuanced performances that should cross chart lines to capture the attention
of pop, soul and soft jazz audiences alike.
