PAMELA WILLIAMS
Evolution (Fome Records)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Although her Grover Washington, Jr. influenced saxophone sound is primed for the smooth jazz market, Pamela Williams doesn't subscribe to the limitation of musical labels. While I'm sure she welcomes the airplay the smooth jazz stations offer, she moves handily between the jazz, pop and R&B worlds,

With a resume that includes top R&B tours and stints as part of the house bands for the Tonight Show and the Arsenio Show, Hall has been recording in her own right since the release of Saxtress in 1996. With the release of Evolution, she has expanded her musical repertoire to include vocals and keyboards along with alto and soprano saxophone. Whatever she uses to express her music, though, she expresses a soulful sensuality with an appealing pop sensibility. There are no rough edges here, or groundbreaking risks taken, but Pamela Williams' talent is undeniable, and, as the accompaniment to a romantic mood, her music is irresistible.
