PER MISSION
A Ritual Loop (Monitor Records)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Oh, I was so excited when I got this album and first put it on! Finally, a
band I had never heard of, responsible for some of the most beautiful,
creepiest music I've heard in ages, resplendent with amazing percussion (it
sounds like everything from a cowbell to a cardboard box were incorporated
into the drum kit), gorgeously eerie loops and samples, and even the
occasional strange bit of spoken word and piano interludes placed expertly
in some of the instrumentals. I was slightly less exhilarated, when I finally
got around to reading the press kit, to find that the actual players on the
album included Jason Noble and Kyle Crabtree (Shipping News/Rodan), and
Rachel Grimes and Christian Frederickson (Rachel's) amongst other
not-so-obscure players. Some days it seems like all the good, innovative
music in the country are being made by the same ten people, and while I
love getting and listening to the records made by these ten people, it just
makes me kind of sad.
