SATAN'S PILGRIMS
Self-titled (MuSick Recordings)
Reviewed by Holly Day
This is some of the smoothest, groovinest surf music being released today,
with definite echoes of the Blue Stingrays and other classic surf guitar
instrumentalist of 40 years ago. Instead of playing up the mawkish qualities
of Annette and Frankie film soundtracks, where everyone's all goofy and
flailing around on the beach to repetitive chord changes and the occasional
slow dance, Satan's Pilgrims have made an art of exploring where a song can
take you, starting songs with a wonderful retro theme that soon incorporates
everything from cool horns to harsh-sounding guitar feedback.
