SHAWN PITTMAN
Full Circle (Shawn Pittman Music)
Reviewed by Eric Steiner
There are very, very few blues artists that surprise me. Men and women who've got the talent to
play traditional blues in a new way, though, usually get my attention. Dallas' Shawn Pittman is
one of those artists, and his latest disc deserves a chance at the big leagues of the blues. His first
two discs were released on Cannonball Blues, and his own CD, Full Circle, showcases some fine
original Texas blues. Shawn's guitar work is impeccable, and for good measure he's thrown in
a passionate and rollicking piano cover of Bob Dylan's "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a
Train to Cry." The originals that really set Shawn Pittman apart from the blues pack include
"Distress Signal," "I Smell Trouble," and "One of These Days." This high-energy blues record
should be Shawn Pittman's springboard to many gigs outside Dallas, for sure. Tommy Shannon
and Chris Layton, otherwise known as Double Trouble, help out on several cuts, and when they
do, this CD's a winner.
