SUPER CHIKAN
Shoot That Thang (Rooster Blues)

Reviewed by Eric Steiner

James "Super Chikan" Johnson's got his own unique take on traditional Mississippi Delta blues. Take one look at his homemade guitars, fretboards attached to 5-gallon metal gas cans, and you might think Super Chikan's a little bit, well, eccentric. He calls his creations "Chicantars." Listening to his original blues in "Guilty Man," "Mennonite Blues," or "Tin Top Shack" helped me take Super Chikan very seriously. On Shoot That Thang, Super Chikan's got bassist Harvell Thomas and Dione Thomas on drums, two of the artists that have contributed to the success of the Delta Blues Education Program out of Clarksdale, Mississippi. Shoot That Thang features some of the best home grown Delta blues with Super Chikan's unique blend of humor.
