Any Woman's Blues (Rounder Heritage)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

This was released as part of Rounder Records' 30th anniversary celebration and provides an overview of the wide range of blues styles the label has presented by some of the foremost women performers in the field. From the deep soul of Irma Thomas to the country blues of Rory Block and beyond, there's something for every taste here and not a disappointment in the lot. The package includes a booklet with track notes and artist profiles along with the sixteen tracks of unmitigated pleasure.

If the goal of this release was to send listeners back to the store to explore the Rounder catalog more deeply, it's bound to succeed, because of the quality of the performers and performances alike. It's just fine as a musical document in its own right, though, a keeper in any collection.
