ZENI GEVA
10,000 Light Years (Neurot Records)
Reviewed by Holly Day
It's obvious to see why Japan's notorious Zeni Geva has been called one of
the most influencial voices of the noise/deconstruction movement in music.
For nearly 20 years, K.K. Null and his rotating collaborative staff of
nutcases (including guitarist Mitsuru Tabata of the Boredoms) have been
creating some of the most hellish, angry, arrhythmic music out there, and,
unlike many of their Japanese counterparts, have had enough of a following
that they've been able to take their act on the road with like-minded bands
like Shellac and the Melvins and inspire countless youngsters to follow in
their musical footsteps. 10,000 Light Years is actually quite tame in
comparison to some of their previous releases, adhering to an actual song
structure at times, but it's still amazingly disconcerting and cool.
