BARON SAMEDI ESQ
Ecstatic Soul Quintet: Live No Overdubs (Libertine Rex/Scratch)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Rough and thrilling, this live, off the sweaty dancefloor recording certainly captures a "where it's at" vibe. Steamy organ and sax duel up front, whilst the bongos keep the joint hopping. This is primitive sixties style soul jazz, vamped up with a loose garage rock angle - all that's missing is a howling daddy-o at the mike. But then again, that may be the point. Don't interrupt the damn groove with some loud mouth! The ground may not be shaking, but hips surely will.
