CHEB MAMI
Lazrag Saani (Mondo Melodia)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Long known as the Prince of Rai, Cheb Mami (born Mohamed Khelifati) has taken on the role of ambassador of the blend of Algerian traditional music and western pop since his duet with Sting on the international hit "Desert Rose." For those who are unfamiliar but intrigued with his talents, Lazrag Saani provides an excellent introduction.

Drawn from material previously found only on various compilations and European releases, it's a survey of the variety of sounds he's explored in recent years. Strings, horns, dance beats and other western conventions are blended with Algerian instrumentation to create a truly international form, one that has been the subject of considerable controversy in its Algerian home base. That controversy is largely based on a perception of licentiousness and political content that will be missed by non-Arabic speakers, but the infectious quality of the rhythms and Cheb Mami's vocal talents come through clearly and make this one a delight even if the lyrics are unintelligible.
