THE JEWWS
The Now Sound Explosion (Demolition Derby)
Reviewed by DJ Johnson
The Jewws' brand of garage rock is coated with that bluesy chill that made the early Stones so cool, but they can suddenly shift gears into instro surf mode, make it very credible, and still have the same aura about them. Maybe it's just the spell they've got you under by track five, "Moon Equipped," that somehow makes the sudden shift to surf logical, but they jolt your senses when the song is suddenly interrupted with the sound of the needle ripping across the record and the perplexed voice of a young kid asking "Why'd you do that!?" The cynical, sneering reply? "Aww, I don't like that surfin' shit." He might mean it, since there's just the one surf tune amongst 13 rockers, some of them, like "Animal," so hot it throws sparks from the stylus. Garage fans want a certain feeling that's hard to put into words, one they get from old records by The Troggs, Chocolate Watch Band and MC5, and more recent ones by The Kaisers, The Smugglers and, thankfully, many other excellent revival bands. If you know some serious garage freaks and they haven't added this Texas band's records to their collections yet, be a hero and turn 'em on to The Jewws.
