MORPHINE
The Best Of 1992-1995 (Ryko)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

A tidy little comp spanning the first three records by trend-setting bottom enders Morphine, augmented by superb unreleased sides, makes for a swank listen. The late Mark Sandman and his two stringed guitar bass contraption added a new hip angle to rock which suddenly became baritone obsessed. Morphine's influence cannot be denied, and the fact that they made excellent music is a bonus. Collecting the best moments is a no-brainer, but it is the surfacing of previously unheard material like the epic "Jack and Tina" that is a fitting nail on the much beloved coffin.
