RANDY HOWARD
I Rest My Case (Sugar Hill)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
At 18 he became the youngest player ever to win the title of World Champion
fiddler in Union Grove, North Carolina, one of the high points in a fiddle
convention career that included a record setting 12 National Championships.
At 28, he headed for Nashville, carving out a career as a studio musician on
sessions for artists including George Jones, Chet Atkins, Garth Brooks,
Shelby Lynne, J.D. Crowe and many others. At 38, the world lost Randy
Howard to cancer, but he lives forever in his recorded legacy.
I Rest My Case is an important part of that legacy. These recordings
showcase his talents in the company of guest artists like Carl Jackson,
David Grisman, Don Rigsby, Jerry Douglas, Roy Huskey, Jr. and Sam Bush.
When Randy Howard sat down to record in his own name, he attracted the very
best, because he was the very best. These fourteen tracks display his skill
with bluegrass, country and swing styles, and deserve to be heard by anyone
with an interest in great music in any form.
