THE SADIES
Stories Often Told (Outside)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
The Sadies continue to evolve as songwriters and editors. Whereas previous efforts were peppered with songs, often twenty or more per release, they've paired it down to the classic LP standard, and folks, classic is what we have. Yes the frivolous thirty second ditties were fun, but this is another ballgame altogether. With Stories Often Told, the Good brothers have conjured up a coherent album that flows naturally from beginning to end. Like a good book, you can't leave it alone until the dang thing's done. They still may be smarmy wiseasses on stage, but The Sadies are proving themselves serious musicians and one of the best representatives of widescreen country/folk/rock sprawl, no matter what decade we're talking about.
