SCOTT MORGAN'S POWERTRANE
Ann Arbor Revival Meeting (Real-O-Mind)
Reviewed by Alan Wright
A Detroit "supergroup" featuring Scott Morgan (Rationals, Sonics
Rendezvous Band, Hydromatics), Deniz Tek (Radio Birdman, Visitors, Deep
Reduction), and Andrew Gillespie (Mitch Ryder Band, Torpedoes, Rob Tyner
Band), along with the crack rhythm section of Chris Taylor (Malinga) and
Andre Frost (Hydromatics). Recorded live at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor
in 2002, this thing really cooks! What a line-up, what a sound! Morgan
and Tek share the lead vocal duties, offering up a selection of songs
from previous musical endeavors. Thus, you get classics like "Hangin'
On," "What Gives," "Dangerous," "Blood From A Stone," "Outside," "Ready
To Ball" and much more. After 12 songs of total rock action, they are
joined by former Cult Heroes singer Hiawatha Bailey and Ron Ashton
guitar for a run though of five Stooges classics! I was a big fan of
the Cult Heroes, whose two '70s singles I've always been a big fan of.
Hiawatha does a great job on the four songs he leads: "1969," "I Wanna
Be Your Dog," "Down O The Street" and "No Fun" (Deniz sings the last
one, "T.V. Eye") and Ashton's guitar shreds. This must've been an
amazing show to have witnessed!
