Local Underground, Vol. Two (Vitamin)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
The second volume in Vitamin Records' Local Underground series highlights the
work of Chilean born, Seattle raised and, since the mid-90's, L.A. based DJ
Sol. One of the premier female turntablists, Sol's mixes combine deep house
with a Latin sensibility, and the range of rhythmic possibilities that
results has kept dance floors filled from coast to coast. Although she
maintains a jet set schedule, she has still managed to hold down a
residency at Giant in LA.
Included among the eleven cuts selected for this disc are a pair of her
previously unreleased original efforts, in partnership with Loic Howzelle,
demonstrating that she has a future beyond the DJ booth. The energetic
grooves she maintains in this brief example (brief, that is, for Sol, who
likes to keep her live sets at around four hours) will leave the listener
hopeful that she never moves too far away from the turntables, though.
