THE BOBBY FULLER FOUR
I Fought the Law
The Best of the Bobby Fuller Four (Rhino)

Reviewed by Holly Day

Would there have been raw, surf-inspired garage rock without the Bobby Fuller Four? Well, probably, yeah, since most musical scenes tend to be symptomatic of the area around them (which is why going back in time and killing Hitler never works) - but the fact of the matter is, they did exist, and they left a wonderful, rich legacy of music that fits just in between the crooning vocals of the '50's and the harder sounds of '60's garage rock.

Some of the songs on this tragically and inevitably too-short collection include their rendition of "I Fought the Law," the wonderfully melancholy "Another Sad and Lonely Night," the rough riding "Phantom Dragster" and "King of the Wheels," and the sadly final track, "Big Kahuna," a trashy, raw number that only hints what might have become of Fuller and his music if he hadn't died so early and mysteriously.
