CARL STORY
& HIS RAMBLING MOUNTAINEERS
The Bluegrass Gospel Collection (CMH Records)

Reviewed by Ron Saranich

Carl Story, who recorded from the 1940s to the 1990s, is considered the father of bluegrass gospel music. He combined the bluegrass sound of Bill Monroe with soaring gospel harmonies and launched a subset of bluegrass that is still going strong today. The Bluegrass Gospel Collection is a superbly crafted compilation of 20 classic gospel numbers recorded in 1976 by Story and his red hot band. The group featured Story on guitar and vocals, Mike McKeller on guitar and vocals, Mitchell Moser on bass and vocals, Larry Beasley on 5-string banjo and vocals, Jeff Dalton on mandolin and vocals, Clay Smith on bass, Arthur Smith on fiddle, Red Rector on mandolin, and Ray Adkins on bass.

All these artists have technique to burn on their chosen instruments. They can flat out play. However, it's their exquisite vocal harmonies which stand out and grab the listener. With 5 people sharing the vocals, the songs are evocative and heartfelt. Classic songs such as "Somebody Touched Me," "Angel Band," and "Come Home" are magnificent. Story and his bandmates' purity of purpose is truly inspiring. Kudos to CMH Records for re-releasing this musical gem.
