David Grubbs sucks you in with several inviting pop gems, then he starts to tinker, and then he starts to meander and before the record ends he has put you through a soundscape wringer. Dunno why that is, but that's been Grubbs' modus operandi to date, and he just can't help fucking around with his records. Maybe it's a weeding out process, to gain a dedicated following who will follow him through thick and thick, or maybe he just can't help himself. Could be one of those artsy moves. Regardless, there are some terrific hooks to be had, and if some sonic squalor is required as accompaniment, then so be it.
