KOTUR
The Wheel (MTKOTUR Music)

Reviewed by Jeremy Barker

Kotur is a Dayton, Ohio band fronted by Michael Kotur, a veteran player who has been wowing audiences for 18 years. Taking its influence from world music, jazz, blues, and world beat, Kotur can almost be described as "prog-blues." The element of experimentation seems to be first and foremost, as Kotur mixes all of these styles together. As important as Kotur himself, the rhythm section does more than hold its own. Jordan Hampton, on bass, and Scott Sofier, on drums, do more than "play in the pocket". Their input into the music is just as important, which is unusual for a band that is primarily the vehicle of a virtuoso guitar player.

But while altogether tasteful, some of the songs lack the soul that a live performance would certainly contain. And some of the songs sound simply like a good time to go get a drink. You know, when half of the band has gone to the bathroom and a couple guys are left to jam a little interlude. You wouldn't mind missing it.

But that doesn't apply to all of the songs, or even any one in particular. Each song has its moment of inspiration that carry the rest of the song. But if you're easily bored with blues noodling, this album may not appeal to you. However, if hearing an odd note played at an odd interval in a standard solo makes hairs stand up on the back of your neck, this will definitely appeal to you. This is for fans who wished Stevie Ray woulda just played and not tried to sing. Equally at home are the Phish heads who love seemingly improved guitar solos. It's definitely worth checking out if you happen to find yourself in either category.
