INDIGO GIRLS
Come On Now Social (Epic)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

At first glance, it's a little amazing that the Indigo Girls have managed to carve out 10 years as a major label act. They've never hit all that high on the charts and their brand of politically topical music is about 30 years out of fashion with mainstream audiences. They do have a wildly devoted following, though, that extends far beyond the scope you'd expect for a pair of socially conscious out lesbian folk rock singers in the 21st century. They built that following on a foundation of terrific songs and they've kept at it against conventional wisdom. In the process, they've become something of an institution.

There are some more great songs here, and some more important messages, and, well, this one has everything you expect from the Indigo Girls, and a few bonuses from guest artists like Joan Osborne, Sheryl Crow, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Garth Hudson and Rick Danko. If you're among those who don't know what to expect from the Indigo Girls, this is a good place to find out.
