ISAAC HAYES
Ultimate Collection (Hip-O)

Reviewed by DJ Johnson

The younger generation knows him as Chef, South Park's porn-singing advice-giver, but if that's all you want to talk about, shut your mouth: I'm talkin' bout Shaft! Isaac Hayes was one of the driving forces at Stax/Volt during the 70s, a team player who was as comfortable lending uncredited piano and arranging support as he was with being in the spotlight himself. His solo recordings ranged from wildly successful ("Theme From Shaft," "Never Can Say Goodbye") to underground chic ("Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalynist"), but almost everything he did had that air of sexual cool that he now skillfully parodies as Chef. His baritone voice slipped around the words and squeezed in the same way that Barry White's did, only with a darker vibe that suggested danger. The Ultimate Collection is a killer, packed to capacity with 16 funky, soulful chunks of Isaac Hayes' ultravibe makeout medicine, that will be spinning in the CDs players in your living room and bedroom, if you know what I mean.
