JIM HALL
Ballad Essentials (Concord)

This recent release is a compilation of 5 albums Jim Hall recorded for
Concord records during the 1980s. Prior to these recordings, Hall had
played with many of the greats in jazz, including Sonny Rollins, Paul
Desmond, Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan, and Ella Fitzgerald to name just a
few. Hall's guitar style, which is fairly recognizable after hearing him
several times, is subtle, warm, and lyrical. His solos on this cd are
mellow yet sophisticated, his choice of notes brilliant and creative.
Among the better tracks are a quartet version of Ellington's "Prelude To A
Kiss"; "I See Nothing To Laugh About" - a duet with George Shearing on
piano; and the Gershwin brothers' "Embraceable You" with Hall and Ron
Carter on bass. The recorded sound is excellent, especially on the live
versions. I find this music perfect for unwinding after a long work day as
it has a wonderful contemplative quality. Ballad Essentials is a worthy
addition to any jazz collection.
