LED ZEPPELIN
Latter Days - Best Of, Volume Two (Atlantic)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Along with Volume One, Early Days, this collection rounds out the essentials from the fabled career of the founding fathers of heavy metal and progressive rock. By the time these tracks were recorded, the Led Zeppelin sound was pretty formulaic, but it was a formula that could still yield impressive results. Equal parts electric blues, hard rock and mystical folk, blended with emotionally charged vocals and screaming guitar over a background of granite solid rhythm, shake well and serve loud. Repeat often.

The ten cuts on Latter Days aren't as definitive to my ear as some of the work on the earlier collection - there's no "Black Dog" or "Stairway To Heaven" here - but they're just as precious to the faithful, and they do make up an important part of the band's catalog. Plus another video treat, this time of "Kashmir." This is stuff you gotta have.

Track List:

The Song Remains The Same * No Quarter * Houses Of The Holy * Trampled Underfoot * Kashmir * Ten Years Gone * Achilles Last Stand * Nobody's Fault But Mine * All My Love * In The Evening
