PET SHOP BOYS
Nightlife (Sire)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

The Pet Shop Boys ruled the dance floors of the late 80s with a formula that recognized that while the beat was the heart of a great dance track, melody was the soul of pop, and the combination, with a healthy dollop of humor, was a recipe for success.

On Nightlife, Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant return to their winning ways, drawing on the full range of dance styles from disco forward and mixing them with an irresistible pop sensibility. Their sound may be familiar, but they still manage to find a new twist, whether rhythmic, melodic or lyrical, to make their time tested style sound consistently fresh. The competition has thinned out considerably as this kind of music has fallen from popular favor, but these guys were well ahead of the pack at its most crowded. On the cusp of a new century, they continue to show the way forward and as long as there are people whose idea of a good time is going out and getting sweaty, there will be room for this kind of music done this well.
