POCO
The Best Of Poco - The Millennium Collection (MCA)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

While the "best" of Poco had arguably come and gone before the earliest track on this CD (1975's "Keep On Trying") had been recorded, those early Epic days with Jim Messina, Richie Furay and Randy Meisner will have to be documented elsewhere. This is, though, the best of the prototypical country rock band's tenure with ABC/MCA, and that's plenty good enough to justify adding this package to your collection.

While Messina, etc., may have left for other ventures by the time this music was made, Poco mainstay and steel guitar wizard Rusty Young is on hand throughout and there's plenty from other notable names in the ever changing lineup of the band, including Timothy B. Schmidt, George Grantham and Paul Cotton. No matter who was playing, though, there were always some great songs, if not always great albums, coming from the band, and this set includes 11 of them, with 8 chart hits including 1979's Adult Contemporary #1, "Crazy Love."

Both musically and historically significant, this is a compilation you'll want to have.
