WYLIE & THE WILD WEST
Ridin' The Hi-Line (Rounder)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

In a world full of countrypolitan hat acts, Wylie Gustafson is the real deal. A Montana ranch-raised, cow-punchin', calf ropin' cowboy singer whose big belt buckle is a rodeo reward, not a designer decoration. And he's a yodelin' fool to boot.

When he's not working the range on his Dusty, Washington spread or winning those buckles, Wylie writes songs about the west and the people who inhabit it, mixing cowboy ballads with western swing. The result is great music that's great fun.

Singing cowboys may not appear on film much these days, but cowboys still sing. Wylie sings and yodels as well as any of them could hope to and writes about them as well as anyone writes about anything.
