THE RESIDENTS
13th Anniversary Show Live
in Tokyo (East Side Digital)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Having seen The Residents play live myself and knowing what an absolutely
glorious thing that is to see and hear, I urge anyone out there who is a
fan of the band to pick up a copy of this album and not be frightened off
by the word "live" in the title. While most of the Residents' material
sounds like it should be confined in a studio, they somehow transform
their studio material into stage-worthy pieces extremely well, taking the
eerie, epileptic-fit-causing quality of their songs to new levels of
strangeness and making them almost completely new songs. On this
particularly wonderful compilation of Residents' material, the band
performs many of the songs from their repertoire, including tracks from
Duckstab, which I consider by far their best studio album. Spanning their
history of concerts in Tokyo from 1985 to 1999, this is one live album
fans of the macabre and bizarre must have.
