Shanti Project Collection 2 (Badman)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Badman has released their second collection to support the San Francisco
AIDS/HIV support organization, the Shanti Project, and it's something any
fan of the alt/indie scene should snatch up. Seven of the most
significant women artists in the field have been recruited to submit
unreleased tracks, resulting in a remarkably cohesive compilation project.
Mimi Parker, Kristin Hersh, Paula Frazer, Rebecca Gates, Edit Frost, Julio
Doiron and Mellissa Auf der Maur are artists to be reckoned with. Between
them, they've helped shape the music of bands including Low, Throwing
Muses, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins, the Spinanes and Tarnation, and
individually each is a significant composer and/or interpreter. This is a
chance to hear them outside the constraints of their band settings,
performing music of their choice in the manner of their choice. The
results draw on their histories to point toward their futures, which are
in every case bright.
Great music and a good cause. So whatcha waiting for? Go get it.
