FAMILIAR 48
Wonderful Nothing (MCA)

Every time I think I'm starting to hear something original and gripping, the grip is lost due to repetition and while I'm hearing it over and over it starts to sound like an imitation of someone else doing an imitation of Pearl Jam. Post semi-interesting Pearl Jam. Jayy Mannon has a powerful voice, but I don't hear anything in anyone else's performance that makes me think there aren't several dozen bar bands doing it better for beer money. Though this will be the first time their name will show up in the official record, it's actually their second release. They were originally called Bonehead but had to change the name when they found out it was owned by another band (two, actually, though I'm not sure how that works). So Philly's Bonehead became Familiar 48, a name I can't tell you the origin of, but my guess is that it refers to the number of bands that sound just like them.
