FREDRIC GARY COMEAU
Hungry Ghosts (Audiogram)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

Songs about drinking, death and winter - must be a Canadian release. Yup, but here's the good news: we have a new clever and dour folksinger ready to replace Leonard Cohen. Fredric Gary Comeau is that good, perhaps better. His laconic prose, melodically grunted, balanced by a Daniel Lanois Acadia sound, is a rare, original beast. There hasn't been a good depressing record in a spell, everyone is busy rah-rahing our sorry spirits when what we really need is some disturbing. Good to hear someone wallowing in utter misery. Misery you can't help but hum along to.
