JAMES BROWN
The Millenium Collection Vol 2 - The 70s (Polydor)

Reviewed by DJ Johnson

Most of the CDs in the 20th Century Masters Millennium Collection series run about half an hour for the budget price of 12 bucks. It's a trade off. It's also never a particularly fulfilling collection for true fans of the artist, but it's usually a pretty good starting point for a newbie just delving in. This one is a bit different. The first volume gave us a short taste of James' early soul classics and fit right into the typical Millennium series pattern, but Volume Two runs its 10 tracks to 51 minutes, fusing a few of James' 70s-era 2-part singles into longer single songs. Many people assume James Brown was funked out by the 70s, but they're dead wrong. The 70s may have been turbulent for Soul Brother #1, but his deepest and bounciest grooves come from that decade, and while this is by no means the collection I recommend to those of you who really want to get into it, it's one I'll gladly recommend to someone who just wants an inexpensive sample of the James Brown of the 70s with very good sound quality at a reasonable price. I can't imagine not wanting it all, but I guess some people are just tryin' to find the bridge.
